Three years before Sonic Adventure 2 came out, Penders created a character named Spectre. He’s an echidna with black fur, is very moody and angry, can be very violent, sometimes has a gentle side, seemingly teleports around, shoots chaos energy from his hands, and is much older than he looks. Sound familiar? There’s a reason he’s thought of as Shadow the Echidna. Shadow before Shadow. In the Archie comics he was one of Knuckles’ many living grandpas. But since they don’t live for hundreds of years in this continuity and because I like him so much I wanted to use him, he’s been given the job of Death for the echidnas. Another unnecessarily convoluted thing in Archie’s echidna lore is the afterlife for guardians. Basically Star Wars force ghosts. And there’s even more to it than that. So I’m simplifying it all. But enough of that nonsense, the city’s under attack!

Knuckles the Echidna is the guardian of the Master Emerald as well as protector of Angel Island. Not only is it his home but it’s also home to various other mobians. Some good and some bad. He’ll have his hands full protecting the former from the latter. Everyone wants something and Knuckles would prefer some peace and quiet.
